History of Capalaba
Settlement started in the early 1850s. Most settlers were people wanting to set up their own farms, and others were millers and timber trades people lured by the many huge trees in the area.
Capalaba was also an important hub to other parts of the Redlands, like Cleveland. Travellers went through Capalaba to get to Cleveland because it was the only way to cross Tingalpa Creek. The first crossing of the creek was an old ford over a rocky area of the creek north of the current Tingalpa Creek Bridge. It was called The Rocks, and was dangerous. It could only be crossed at low tide. The first bridge was built in 1874 and this led to much greater development. The Capalaba hotel was built a couple of years later and this became the centre of town.
Besides being a gateway to the Redlands, Capalaba was primarily a farming settlement. Most people who lived here worked as farmers, raising cattle, pigs and poultry, and growing crops.
Growth and Development
As the community grew, the need for shops, schools, churches and trades like plumbers were also in need. The first school was built in 1874, and the current state school was opened in 1880. The Capalaba School of Arts Hall was built in 1934 and quickly became the centre of the community.
Many people moved to here because land was cheap and it was only 30 kilometres from the centre of Brisbane. The Leslie Harrison Dam was built on Tingalpa Creek in 1968 which enabled the suburb to become one of the fastest-growing parts of The Redlands. Farms started to disappear as houses were being built, transforming Capalaba into the commercial centre it is today.
